Latest LCC News

December 13, 2006 -For those of you who do not know. HRM Council rescinded the motion to close the club tonight.

Further, Bob Harvey made a motion to instruct HRM Staff to negotiate a long term lease with Lakeshore. This is a major step in our fight for survival. We still have negotiations to complete but we are going to survive. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to all the members and friends of the curling club.

Your actions and pressure has made this possible. We now urge you to stop the emails to the councillors. These emails and your efforts have made this all possible. It is now time for us to rest and let the negotiations take there course.

Please watch this space for further updates.

Thank you again,

Your Lakeshore Curling Club Executive.

December 6, 2006 - Last night Halifax Council met to vote on the motion submitted by Bob Harvey. The motion would see the debt or debt payments transferred to HRM coffers. The motion amended to be passed to HRM staff for a costing report. The motion was passed on the basis that HRM staff return to council with the report. Staff advised that they will have the report by the end of January 2007. At that time there will be a vote on the motion. This motion, if passed, should enable us to negotiate a long term contract with HRM.

In addition, Brad Johns made a motion to suspend the curling club closure until after the above motion is voted on. This also restricts HRM staff (Michael Bird) from entering into any contracts or contract negotiations with other groups interested in the curling arena space.

At the end of last nights council meeting Councillor Krista Snow (Beaverbank) made a notice of motion to rescind the curling club closure. This motion will be voted upon next Tuesday at the regular council meeting. Your Executive will be working with Councillor Snow to ensure she has the full facts. We will let the members know what is needed from them between now and next Tuesday as soon as we can formulate a strategy.

What does this mean for us?

Well it means a final decision on our future could be postponed until the end of January depending on the Capital debt motion. We do not know what will be the outcome on the motion by Councilor Snow but if passed will leave us in limbo. We would need to negotiate a new agreement with HRM staff. But be assured your executive will continue to work actively to find alternate facilities and programs to ensure the continuation of Lakeshore Curling Club until we have a definite decision on us staying at the Sackville Sports Stadium.

December 5, 2006 - Council will be voting on Councillor Harvey's motion to absorb the debts of the municipality's recreational facilities. If Council approves this motion, it will be a very big step towards saving our club. It will also lighten the burden of these facilities, which are struggling under a heavy capital debt load as well as the requirement to meet annual operating costs.
